I thought of using that example to illustrate. There’s also the concept of a “double-bind” in psychology which is about the same. I also believe this dynamic is implicit in gas-lighting. There’s a Star Trek where this happens as well. Spock gives the well-intentioned yet genocidal computer instructions it cannot handle, and it breaks down.
I’d also hazard to say many nations, including America, are built on contradictory premises. It sets up a dynamic tension which can be constructive but if it falls apart, not so great.
