Research on consent and engagement in non-consensual or partially consensual activity definitely is framed within maladaptive cultural constructs, to put it too mildly.
There is also work I’ve seen on common patterns to address interpersonal problems. This research is small in scope so take it with a grain of salt, but the found there are three patterns: flexible-adaptive, hostile-withdrawn and exploitable-subservient, correlated with attachment style and clearly related to cultural and developmental experiences, and also with different breakdown by gender.
So your hypothesis sounds correct, commonsense, and supported by data in this limited study.
